In Her Own Words

Writing takes a special talent, especially when writing for others. It has to be honest, understandable, and yes, entertaining. A book recently published by a Highlands resident is that and more. “Living MOSTLY in Maine in the 20th Century, a Personal History” by Barbara Savage Thompson, is, quite simply, a great read. “It took me about a year to do this,” she says. “I took a course in autobiographical writing through Senior College . The process of writing it was the best part. It’s actually not that difficult to remember, once you focus on a particular time.”

Spring Semester

Winter vacation for many is over now, and it’s time to go back to school. There’s one school where age is not a barrier, but an enhancement, and that’s Midcoast Senior College. The spring semester begins March 10th, running through May 2nd, with some shorter classes in-between. Sixteen classes in all are being offered, covering a broad range of subjects in literature, art, music, history, science, even dreams! The best part is, there are no grades. These courses are offered to seniors, and are taught by seniors, retired professors and experts in their fields. It’s truly learning for the joy of learning.

Life's Opportunities Await at The Highlands

We encourage all our residents to be independent and secure in knowing that amenities and support services are available should they be needed. A well-organized and diversified activities program provides speakers, seminars and entertainment, while off campus events such as the Portland Symphony Orchestra and the Maine State Music Theatre are available with transportation. Educational opportunities are offered through the Midcoast Senior College of the University of Maine, not only with courses offered in the Bath-Brunswick area but also with classes right here on campus. With permission of the class instructor, senior citizens may also audit courses at Bowdoin College.

The Highlands offers its residents peace of mind and security, knowing that someone else is handling the burdens of maintenance, housework and more, giving residents the freedom and opportunity to pursue life's many abundant possibilities.
