The Highlands, Independent Living is just that…. Living as independently as possible, with the burdens of housekeeping and maintenance removed. Life should be easier, not more difficult, with plenty of opportunities to do all those things that have so far been put off until “later”… taking a college class, enjoying a concert, going to a water aerobics class, doing volunteer work for the public library or a favorite non-profit group, hiking a trail, going out for a round of golf, or simply getting together with friends for a game of bridge. All of our Independent residents, no matter where they live, have access to our fitness programs, including our different classes in the gym and Aqua X classes in our indoor heated swimming pool. There are also Tai Chi classes, ping pong, a pool table, and regularly scheduled bridge games. Groups go bowling on regularly scheduled days, as do some of our golfers. We even have a putting green! Our beautifully wooded 75 acres also includes several trails, perfect for a walk spring, summer or fall, and also good for snow-shoeing in the winter. (Yes, some residents do just that!) Plus, our van is always making trips to stores for shopping, or maybe the symphony, different concerts, lectures, and other events. We also have a full service bank (Bath Savings) on campus, along with a regular hair salon, offering manicures and pedicures as well. Our Dining Room in
The Maine Lodge offers fine dining in the evenings Monday through Saturday, with a delicious brunch on Sundays. We also offer a continental breakfast available to all our Independent residents.
There are plenty of choices when it comes to living styles…
The Estates are homes, either duplex or single, available for cooperative purchase. All are two-bedroom two-bath, with plenty of options to customize it to your own preferences, if you are having one built. Or, you may want to purchase one up for re-sale that’s already built, and again, there are still some options that can be added in. All of the homes include a heated garage with attic storage space above. (See

The Maine Lodge offers spacious one and two-bedroom apartments available for rent. This is for the person who prefers congregate living with everything offered for Independent Living under one roof, and a few more services included with the rent. (See

The Benjamin Porter House is so unique, we can’t even show you the floor plans, because each of the six apartments are different. They are within the historic home built 200 years ago by Samuel Melcher III, and feature some of the gems of the Federal period, such as graceful carved molding, high ceilings and nearly full length windows. The apartments have the charm of living in a historic home, but with the modern conveniences such as full-service kitchens. These unique apartments are available for cooperative purchase. (See
