At The Highlands, Independent Living is just that - carefree living without the burdens of home maintenance. Life is easier, with limitless opportunity to do all those things that have so far been put off until later. Residents enjoy the freedom to take a college class at nearby Bowdoin College or through Midcoast Senior College, enjoy a performance at the Maine State Music Theatre, take a water aerobics class in our heated indoor pool, volunteer at the Topsham Public Library, take a hike on one of our many trails right on campus, play a round of golf at the nearby Highland Green Golf Course, or simply get together with friends for a game of bridge. The Highlands is a retirement community where residents demonstrate strong neighborly values and enjoy endless possibilities each and every day.
Residents have access to the countless wellness and fitness programs. They enjoy Tai Chi classes, a wide variety of fitness classes in the gym, water aerobics, Yoga, ping pong with a neighbor or friend, shooting a round of pool, or playing bridge. They can even reserve a tee time for a round of golf. Golf is available at our sister community, Highland Green and at The Highlands, there is a putting green for practice and fun.
Our naturally wooded 75 acre campus also includes several trails that are designed to be perfect for a walk in the spring, summer or fall, bird watching, and also snow-shoeing in the winter!
Our concierge van service is available for shopping in and around historic Topsham, a trip to the symphony, local concerts, lectures, and other area appointments and events.
The Sebasco Dining Room in The Maine Lodge is home to award-winning staff, providing an ever-changing menu selection Monday through Saturday evenings, with a delicious brunch on Sundays. A continental breakfast is also available during the week.
Residents at The Highlands have the following optional services and amenities available to them:
- Chef-prepared restaurant-style meals served in the Sebasco Dining Room or delivered as “Meals to Go!”
- Recreation in the Donald B. Cook Community Center with its indoor pool and fitness center
- Exercise and strengthening classes taught by our in-house Fitness Coordinator. One-on-one personal training sessions are available for all levels of fitness
- Educational opportunities at Bowdoin College, Midcoast Senior College and other nearby adult education programs
- Hair salon services including spa services such as manicures and pedicures

- Access to special events including our famous neighborhood Lobster Bakes
