Ecology Center

In September 2005, construction began on the Cathance River Ecology Center. Groundbreaking was celebrated with a dedication to John Rensenbrink and John Wasileski, co-founders of the Cathance River Education Alliance.  On September 28, 2006 The Cathance River Ecology Center celebrated the completion of the construction project with an open house. The ecology center boasts a 24' x 24' multipurpose meeting room using unique "Green building" features including:

  • The frame is a recycled antique barn transported from New York.
  • Forest Stewardship Council approved lumber.
  • A rooftop photo voltaic system with 16 panels and 750 amp production rate. The 12 battery storage capacity provides for the Ecology Center's "off grid" electrical needs.
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified "cotton batts" insulation made from 80% recycled jeans.
  • Energy Star Marvin Integrity windows from Hancock Lumber.
  • Eco-friendly American clay product for finished walls.
  • The heating system is an efficient bio mass wood pellet stove with the lowest emissions rating in EPA history.
  • Installation of a rain gutter/barrel to provide a water source for classroom use.
  • Outside ramp is made from TREX lumber, a product manufactured from recycled plastic and wood fibers.
  • Energy Star rated compact fluorescent lighting is used to light the center.
  • Chairs are made of recycled plastic and metal.
  • Wind turbine that produces 200 watts of energy.
  • Solar thermal sheet produces 5000 BTUs.
  • Weather station helps gauge our solar radiation amounts.
